The plan was to head out camping for the weekend after work, but that plan got hailed on. We reluctantly stayed home and headed out the next morning to the Deerfield Lake Recreation Area. Deerfield Recreation Area has three campgrounds: Custer Trail, Dutchman, and Whitetail. We drove through all of them and campsites were available, but we decided to stay at an outlying campground Ditch Creek. Most of the campsites we've stayed in around the Black Hills have been creekside and there's nothing better at the end of the day than getting in our van-bed, opening the windows, and falling asleep to the sound of a creek. Once we got to Ditch Creek, we were glad we decided to wait out the storm and camp the following night. Baseball-size hail had broken vent covers on at least two RVs in the storm and piles of hail still stood on the ground.

First thing in the morning, this hairy monster wanted to go on an adventure. We headed out for a night of camping near Spearfish Canyon so we could hike the Old Baldy Trail the following morning. On the way, we stopped at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead. In 2001, the mine closed, but not before becoming the largest mine in the Western Hemisphere over its 126-years in operation. Today, 1.5 miles deep into the former gold and silver mine, scientists are studying dark matter. They did a Radiolab episode a few years back that takes a cool exploration down into the mine and more expertly describes the work scientists are doing with neutrinos underground. We found a spot at Rod & Gun Campground on Roughlock Falls Road. The seven-site campground was delightfully empty and we snatched a large campsite next to the creek.
Kenny and I have been wanting to replace our metal blinds with curtains since Day One. At first, our reasoning for replacing them with cloth curtains was purely aesthetic. After living in the trailer, we found a more practical reason to hate them. At night they'd rattle anytime one of us moved and hit them with a foot, arm, or head. Over the last 10 months on the road, we've gone to a number of fabric stores to look for raw fabric, but realized our options were limited since we no longer owned a sewing machine. So, we considered converting already hemmed fabrics like standard window curtains, fabric shower curtains, or blankets that would limit the amount of iron-on hemming we'd have to do. We were about ready to try and convert king-sized pillowcases into curtains (what?!), when we went loitering at Runnings ("Your Home, Farm & Outdoor Store) and found these dish towels. Then, everything fell into place.
